Starbucks seeks strategies to lure US customers back to its cafes

Starbucks unveils ChatGPT beta app for discovering new drinks

Starbucks has introduced a beta app within ChatGPT to spark creative ideas for customer drink choices, announced by the company on Wednesday.

To access the beta feature, users must activate the Starbucks app from the ChatGPT app directory and include "Starbucks" in a chatbot prompt.

Although they can personalise their drinks and choose their pick-up location, they must finalise their purchase via the official Starbucks app or the website.

This is crucial for Starbucks due to its significant dependency on the loyalty program.

"Throughout the last year, it has become apparent: customers aren’t always starting with a list," explained Paul Riedel, Starbucks' senior VP of digital and loyalty. "They’re beginning with an emotion... We sought to engage with customers at their peak moments of inspiration, simplifying the path to discovering the perfect drink."

The recent announcement on Wednesday demonstrates Starbucks' continuing efforts to draw American customers back to its cafes.

As part of its "Back to Starbucks" strategy, the company has reintroduced seating, streamlined its offerings, and reinstated levels in its loyalty program.

The company has also aided customers in discovering new drinks on its mobile application, offering trending beverage options and a hidden menu in the "offers" section.

Discovering new drinks is especially important for attracting Gen Z, who prefer unique drink options at US chains over older demographics.

Thus far, Starbucks' strategy appears to be working. Following a two-year decline in visitor numbers, the chain recently reported increased customer visits for its fiscal first quarter ending December 28.

Wednesday's news isn't Starbucks' first step into deploying generative AI or collaborating with OpenAI.

Last year, the coffee giant introduced Green Dot Assist, an AI tool for baristas, crafted with Microsoft Azure's OpenAI platform.

Other brands are also collaborating with OpenAI to boost revenues. Major companies like Walmart, Etsy, and Booking.com have been experimenting with shopping and purchasing features through ChatGPT's platform.
