Michigan gas station clerk rescues kidnapped student
Brave clerk Abdulrahman Abohatem stepped from behind the safety glass to protect the girl
A courageous petrol station clerk in Michigan has earned widespread praise for his decisive actions that saved a sixteen-year-old student from an ongoing kidnapping.
The frightening ordeal began on the morning of Monday in Hamtramck, when the teenager was snatched while walking to school.
According to Hamtramck Police Chief Hussein Farhat, the suspect, later identified as 48-year-old Donald J. Fields, took the girl to a Sunoco station in Detroit roughly thirty minutes after the abduction.
While inside the shop, the suspect attempted to force the girl to pay for cigarettes. It was at this critical moment that clerk Abdulrahman Abohatem noticed something was wrong.
Recalling the encounter, he explained: "When [the suspect] ask her to pay for the cigarettes, I stop and go, there's something wrong. And she mouthed, talked to me, like with no sound, 'Help.' "
Showing remarkable bravery, Mr Abohatem left his protective enclosure to confront the man and ushered the student to safety.
Police arrived as the clerk was ejecting the suspect from the premises. "I see the police outside. I point to him. I go, that's the guy," Mr Abohatem stated.
Fields has since been arraigned on charges including kidnapping and criminal sexual conduct. Mayor Adam Alharbi commended the clerk’s intervention, alongside students who used social media to track the victim's location.
Mr Abohatem reflected on the rescue, saying, "I feel good when you save somebody." The student is now recovering at home with her family. Following this incident, local authorities are continuing their investigation into the suspect’s background and previous activities.
