Tragedy has struck Annandale, Virginia, where police have confirmed that former Lieutenant Governor Justin Fairfax fatally shot his wife, Cerina, before taking his own life.

The harrowing incident occurred shortly after midnight on Thursday, 16 April, within the family residence. Fairfax County Police Chief Kevin Davis revealed that the couple’s son, Cameron, was the one who alerted authorities to the scene.

The couple had reportedly been navigating a "messy" divorce at the time of their deaths and were sleeping in separate beds.

Financial investigations conducted following the tragedy have uncovered significant personal turmoil. Court records reviewed by investigators indicate that Fairfax had defaulted on nearly $30,000 in credit card debt.

Two separate default judgments were handed down against the former official in 2025. Furthermore, divorce filings contained claims from Cerina that her husband had failed to contribute to their children’s tuition fees and had neglected to pay the mortgage on their family home.

Fairfax was scheduled to appear in court regarding the ongoing divorce proceedings on 21 April, just days after the shooting took place.

Chief Davis noted that the situation appeared to be a domestic escalation within a deteriorating relationship. Fairfax served as the Lieutenant Governor of Virginia from 2018 until 2022.

During his time in office, his career was marked by significant public scrutiny and various controversies. Local authorities are continuing to offer support to the surviving family members as the community reacts to the shocking loss of life.
