Shooting near University of Iowa leaves three students hospitalized

At least three University of Iowa students were injured in a shooting early Sunday morning near campus in Iowa City, authorities confirmed, prompting an active investigation and a statewide response.

The incident occurred around 1:46 a.m. on April 19 in the 100 block of East College Street, according to Iowa City Public Safety.

Police initially responded to reports of a “large fight” but reported hearing gunfire upon arrival at the scene.

“First responders on scene. Confirmed victims,” the university said in an early update at 2:03 a.m., urging the public to avoid the area.

Upon arrival, officers located multiple individuals suffering from gunshot wounds. The victims were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment. Authorities have not yet released details on their conditions.

Later, University of Iowa President Barb Wilson confirmed that all three injured individuals are students at the university.

“Early today, a shooting in downtown Iowa City injured three University of Iowa students,” Wilson said in a statement. “While we await additional information, I am thinking about these students and their families, friends and all the people who care about them.”

She added that the incident has deeply affected the campus community, saying many are “worried, upset or unsure how to process what has happened.”

“Please know that you are not alone in that,” Wilson said.

Law enforcement officials said no arrests have been made as of Sunday morning. The Iowa City Police Department is continuing to investigate and is urging anyone with relevant information, including security camera footage, to come forward.

Iowa City Area Crime Stoppers is offering a reward of up to $1,000 for information leading to an arrest.

Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds condemned the violence in a public statement, calling it a devastating moment for the state.

“This senseless act of violence has devastated the university community and our state,” Reynolds said, adding that state resources have been made available to support the investigation.
