Kate Hudson jokes about steering son Ryder away from acting career path

Kate Hudson has revealed she has a playful alternative career in mind for her 22-year-old son Ryder Robinson, and it is not acting.

The Running Point star, 46, appeared on Today ahead of the show’s second season when she opened up about Ryder’s upcoming college graduation and his creative side beyond the screen.

“He is graduating, like in weeks,” Hudson said during the interview. While discussing his career interests, she noted that although Ryder is following in the family’s acting footsteps, he also has another passion.

“He’s an actor and likes to make furniture,” she said.

The comment surprised host Craig Melvin, prompting Hudson to elaborate that her son has been working on design projects, including building a sofa.

“He loves designing furniture, and he’s making a sofa right now, which I’m really excited about,” she said, before joking, “I’m like, ‘Maybe go in that direction, Ryder.’”

Hudson shares Ryder with her ex-husband Chris Robinson. She is also mother to son Bingham, 14, with former fiancé Matt Bellamy, and daughter Rani, 7, with fiancé Danny Fujikawa.

The actress has often spoken candidly about motherhood and previously said she is not fully closed off to expanding her family further.

In a past interview on Kylie Kelce’s podcast Not Gonna Lie, Hudson said she could “have so many kids,” adding that she “can’t imagine being done” just yet.

“I even think about it right now,” she said. “It gets a little scarier when you start to watch them grow up… you just hope they are good.”
