Maryland man arrested two decades after wife's disappearance

A Maryland man has been arrested more than two decades after his wife’s disappearance, an event authorities have long believed involved foul play.

Dwight "DJ" Rust Jr was apprehended on Tuesday and charged with first-degree murder in connection with the 2002 case.

His wife, 24-year-old Michelle Rust, vanished from her Arbutus residence on 20 July 2002. At the time, her husband told investigators that she had left home in the morning to purchase supplies for their son's third birthday party but never returned.

The investigation into Michelle's disappearance took a significant turn during the initial search when her father-in-law discovered her green Dodge van in nearby Lansdowne.

Detectives noted that a key had been broken off inside the driver’s side door lock. Furthermore, witness interviews revealed that no one had actually seen Michelle leave the house or drive her vehicle that morning.

Concerns grew as Michelle, who required insulin for diabetes, showed no financial activity on her bank accounts. Family members insisted she would never have abandoned her young child.

Despite the arrest, defence lawyer Jeremy Eldridge maintained his client’s innocence during a briefing.

"I have not heard a single theory or any factual evidence that shows that Mr Rust was involved in his wife Michelle's disappearance," Eldridge stated, adding that he believed the suspect should have been released on home detention.

Dwight Rust Jr is currently being held without bail at the Baltimore County Detention Centre. Before this indictment, Michelle’s biological parents were the only individuals officially ruled out as suspects.
