First details emerge on 'Miami Vice ’85' starring Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler
Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler will lead the film as iconic characters
The long-anticipated Miami Vice reboot starring Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler has officially received its title, with the project now confirmed as Miami Vice ’85, according to industry reports.
The film, directed by Joseph Kosinski, is set to be released by Universal Pictures on August 6, 2027, with IMAX filming scheduled to begin later this year.
Jordan will portray Ricardo “Rico” Tubbs, while Butler takes on the role of James “Sonny” Crockett, characters originally made famous by Philip Michael Thomas and Don Johnson in the 1980s television series, and later revisited by Jamie Foxx and Colin Farrell in the 2006 film adaptation.
According to the official logline, Miami Vice ’85 will explore the “glamour and corruption of mid-80s Miami,” drawing inspiration from the original show’s pilot episode and first season, which helped define the visual style and cultural tone of the era.
Kosinski previously revealed that both Jordan and Butler were among his top casting choices for the project.
“Michael is someone I’ve admired for a long time… Austin is proving himself as someone to watch,” he said in earlier remarks, adding that securing both actors would be “very lucky” for the production.
The film marks another major project for Jordan, who continues a busy career following recent critical acclaim and awards success, while Butler remains in high demand after a string of high-profile film roles.
