How to achieve mental stillness using expert guided meditation techniques

At a time when most struggle to sit quietly even for a few minutes, the idea of growing in meditation can seem distant.

HH Guruji Sundar of Aathman Awareness Centre recently clarified that it is a methodical process rather than a mystery.

He explained that successful practice begins with receiving guidance from an experienced Yogi or an enlightened master to avoid wandering. To foster true spiritual growth, the following steps were shared:

  • You must practice every day at a fixed time to build sincerity and discipline.
  • A meditator should aim to sit for at least one hour to allow the mind to settle.
  • Out of that hour, even five minutes of complete mental silence is extremely valuable.
  • With regular practice, this period of absolute silence gradually increases.

How to start with meditation as a beginner?

In the early stages, physical discipline and the choice of environment play a significant role in settling the mind.

Guruji noted that beginners should meditate in quiet, sacred places like a meditation hall or a temple, while avoiding crowded parks or malls.

"Meditation should not be done immediately after eating," he cautioned, adding that there should be a one-hour gap after meals. A full stomach often leads to sleep and reduces focus.

When is the best time and place to meditate?

According to HH Guruji, it is initially better to meditate alone because each person’s mind operates differently.

Group settings may slow progress until one becomes more stable. He also encouraged seekers to use weekends for satsang to clarify doubts.

As one progresses, subtle changes such as a calmer face and steadier eyes appear. "Spiritual growth requires both practice and understanding," Guruji concluded.
