Prince Jackson turns heads with emotional tribute to dad at ‘Michael’ premiere
Prince Jackson paid tribute to late father, Michael Jackson, at Los Angeles premiere of biopic 'Michael'
Prince Jackson paid tribute to his late father, Michael Jackson, at the Los Angeles premiere of the biopic “Michael,” by wearing an ensemble that included fabric from one of the legend's shirts.
“Michael Bush, my father’s costume designer, crafted the suit I wore,” the 29-year-old shared with ABC News on Thursday about his attire, “and the armband was actually made from the fabric of the red corduroy shirt my dad frequently wore. It's nostalgic for me because when I embraced him, that’s what he had on.”
Jackson was seen in a red corduroy shirt during the 50th Anniversary “American Bandstand” show recording on April 20, 2002 — exactly 24 years before the “Michael” premiere.
Prince attended the premiere on Monday alongside youngsters from his foundation Heal Los Angeles — a group committed to helping local youth flourish.
The attendees were also seen wearing red armbands adorned with the Heal Los Angeles emblem.
Prince mentioned to ABC News that paying tribute to his dad was incredibly meaningful to him.
Michael, who passed away in 2009 at 50, wore a red armband on numerous occasions to symbolize support for children in need.
The armband was likewise “crafted from the fabric my dad (as seen here on April 20, 2002) would continuously wear — the red corduroy shirt,” the singer disclosed. WireImage
Other celebrities at the LA premiere dressed in looks reminiscent of the late Jackson, with stars like Usher, Wale, Myles Garrett, and more sporting loafers, gloves, and suits inspired by the King of Pop’s distinctive style.
Prince and his younger brother Bigi, 24, similarly commemorated their dad’s iconic fashion at the movie’s Berlin premiere earlier this month.
The pair complemented their armbands with a golden crown decal on their suit jackets.
Bigi’s armband featured a special depiction of Michael’s feet, capturing one of the musician’s legendary dance moves.
“Michael,” debuting in theaters Friday, chronicles the star’s life both onstage and off — touching on his time with the Jackson 5 in the 1960s and his complex relationship with his father, Joe Jackson, portrayed by Colman Domingo.
This film is a family endeavor with Jaafar Jackson — son of Michael’s elder brother Jermaine Jackson — taking on the role of his late uncle.
The musical biopic concludes following the release of “Bad” in 1987 and doesn't delve into the explosive child sex abuse allegations against Michael that arose in 1993.
Earlier this week, Jaafar hinted that a follow-up to “Michael” is already “in early development” during a chat with Entertainment Tonight.
“You can't encapsulate everything in one movie,” he noted. “It just isn't feasible.”
Effie Spence, who portrays Liza Minnelli in the feature, also mentioned there are “discussions about a possible second film.”
She shared with Page Six on Friday: “Michael Jackson's life had so many facets and intrigue, with multiple layers worth exploring.”
