Helena Bonham Carter departs 'The White Lotus' season four as filming begins
Mike White is currently rewriting the role originally intended for Helena Bonham Carter
Helena Bonham Carter has officially departed from the fourth season of the acclaimed HBO series The White Lotus just as production was getting underway.
The two-time Oscar nominee was set to lead the upcoming instalment, which is currently filming on the French Riviera.
However, an HBO spokesperson confirmed on Friday, 24 April 2026, that it became apparent once on set that the character created by Mike White did not align with the actress.
Consequently, the role is being rethought and rewritten, with a new actress expected to be cast in the coming weeks.
While the production team expressed sadness over the departure, they remain "ardent fans" of the legendary star.
The fourth season, which is set against the backdrop of the Cannes Film Festival, features a star-studded ensemble including Vincent Cassel, Steve Coogan, and Kumail Nanjiani.
Despite the departure of such a central figure, filming is continuing with a revised schedule to focus on the remaining cast members.
The production is utilising luxury locations such as the Airelles Château de la Messardière in Saint-Tropez and the Hôtel Martinez in Cannes.
Logistically, the show's unique format of keeping the entire cast in one location allows for these sudden creative adjustments.
Bonham Carter was at the top of the producers’ wish list for this season, making the exit a rare occurrence for the meticulous series creator.
The actress has recently been involved in other high-profile projects, including the 2025 period drama The Offing.
Mike White continues to serve as the sole writer and director for the series, which has moved its setting from Thailand to the Côte d’Azur.
