Shooting near Indiana University leaves 9 injured after race festivities

At least nine people were injured after gunfire erupted near Indiana University during celebrations tied to the annual “Little 500” collegiate bicycle race, according to local authorities.

The incident occurred shortly before 12:30 a.m. on Sunday, April 26, in downtown Bloomington, Indiana, when police responded to reports of shots fired near Kirkwood Avenue, an area packed with students and visitors celebrating the post-race festivities.

The Bloomington Police Department confirmed that officers arrived to find multiple injured individuals.

Nine victims were transported to local hospitals, including five taken by ambulance, while others were moved by police vehicles or private transport.

Authorities said one additional injured person arrived at a nearby gas station and was later taken for treatment.

It remains unclear how many of the victims sustained direct gunshot wounds versus injuries from bullet fragments or the chaos that followed.

Police said the investigation remains ongoing, and no suspects have been taken into custody.

In an alert sent to students, Indiana University Police Department urged residents to shelter in place, lock doors, and avoid the area as officers responded to the unfolding situation.

The shooting took place during celebrations surrounding the “Little 500,” an annual event held at Bill Armstrong Stadium that draws large crowds to Bloomington each spring.

Witnesses described a crowded, festive atmosphere that quickly turned chaotic after an altercation reportedly broke out between two women. Moments later, gunfire rang out.

One witness told local media they initially thought it was minor until seeing a woman pull a firearm and begin shooting, prompting people to flee.

Another described the scene as rapidly escalating from celebration to panic, with attendees running for safety as shots were fired.

Law enforcement agencies, including the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office and Indiana State Police, assisted at the scene as investigators continue to piece together what led to the violence.
