The celebrated actor and former professional wrestler Dwayne Johnson, widely recognised by his ring name The Rock, has offered a poignant reflection on his rich cultural heritage.
Taking to his Instagram account, the Jumanji star shared a candid shirtless photograph that highlights the profound meaning behind the extensive "tatau" adornment on his left shoulder.
This sacred Polynesian artwork, which extends across his chest and back, serves as a permanent tribute to his lineage.
Johnson described the ink as "the art that is forever," explaining that the intricate designs are far more than aesthetic choices.
He noted that "every symbol, every marking, tells a very personal story that’s a reflection of my gratitude for my ancestors and my life’s past."
The actor emphasised that the most vital aspect of the piece is its reminder to remain "fully present, in the now."
The Hollywood veteran also detailed the arduous creative process behind the masterpiece, which was designed by the renowned artist Frédéric “Po'oino” Yrondi.
The project required three intensive sessions totalling over 60 hours to complete. Johnson recalled that the pair spent hours in deep conversation and prayer, traditionally accompanied by kava, before beginning the physical work.
He expressed immense respect for Yrondi, whose artistry continues to embody the stories that have shaped Johnson's character over the past two decades.
Born to a Samoan mother, Ata Johnson, and a Black Nova Scotian father, Rocky Johnson, the actor remains a prominent ambassador for Polynesian culture.
He is currently involved in several high-profile film productions slated for release throughout the coming year.
