Antoine Fuqua has revealed that his decision to direct the upcoming Michael Jackson biopic was partly influenced by a striking case of mistaken identity involving Jaafar Jackson.

The filmmaker recalled being “blown away” after being shown a photo he initially believed featured the late King of Pop, Michael Jackson.

The image, however, was actually of Jackson’s nephew, Jaafar, who is set to portray the music icon in the film.

Fuqua said the moment occurred while he was working with cinematographer Bob Richardson, who showed him the image during discussions about the project.

“I thought it was Michael,” Fuqua explained, noting that the resemblance was so convincing it immediately caught his attention.

The encounter helped spark his interest in the biopic, which is being produced by Graham King.

After further discussions and reviewing the script, Fuqua ultimately signed on to direct the project.

The director said his confidence in casting Jaafar Jackson was cemented early during test footage. He recalled an unscripted moment on set when he asked the young actor a question while filming without warning.

According to Fuqua, Jaafar responded fully in character, delivering what he described as a powerful and emotional performance that left several crew members visibly moved.

“It was almost spiritual,” he said, adding that the moment convinced him the actor could embody his uncle on screen.

Fuqua also shared that he had a brief interaction with Michael Jackson in the past, recalling a short phone call when he was being considered to direct the singer’s 1992 music video Remember the Time. He described the late star as “quiet” and “sweet.”

The upcoming biopic, titled Michael, will chronicle the life and career of one of music’s most influential figures, with Jaafar Jackson taking on the role of his iconic uncle.
