Google Photos to launch AI-powered "Digital Wardrobe" inspired by Clueless
Google Photos will automatically identify tops, bottoms, and accessories from your gallery
Google Photos is set to revolutionise personal styling with the announcement of an AI-powered "digital wardrobe" feature. Inspired by the iconic virtual closet from the 1995 film Clueless, the tool will automatically scan a user's existing photo library to identify and extract individual clothing items.
Unlike third-party styling apps that require manual uploads, Google’s system utilises the vast bank of images already stored in a user's account to build a fully browsable inventory of tops, bottoms, jewellery, and accessories.
The new functionality allows users to experiment with their fashion choices by creating a digital mood board. These can be organised by occasion—such as "date night," "work," or "travel"—to streamline the often stressful process of choosing an outfit.
Google has noted that for the most accurate extraction results, the AI performs best when analysing well-lit, full-body photographs.
To further enhance the user experience, a separate "virtual try-on" function will be included, allowing users to visualise how various combinations look on their own digital likeness before getting dressed.
This update places Google Photos in direct competition with established fashion startups like Whering and Acloset. By integrating the feature directly into the "Collections" tab of the existing app, Google aims for massive user adoption through immediate accessibility.
While a specific release date has not been confirmed, the feature is scheduled to debut on Android devices this summer, with an iOS version following shortly after.
The move represents a significant evolution for the application, transitioning it from a simple photo storage service into a functional daily lifestyle assistant.
