Meryl Streep jokes 'they have to be alive' as trio discusses possible third movie

Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway and Emily Blunt have weighed in on the possibility of a third installment in The Devil Wears Prada franchise, offering a mix of enthusiasm and conditions following the release of the long-awaited sequel.

Speaking to People 20 years after the original film debuted, the three actresses agreed that any future continuation would depend heavily on one key element: the script.

“The script,” Streep, 76, said immediately when asked what it would take to return. “A good script. It’s all about the script,” Blunt, 43, echoed.

Hathaway, 43, added that another essential factor would be full cast participation. “And then, everybody has to say yes,” she said, with Blunt clarifying, “It’s got to be the core four,” referring to themselves and returning co-star Stanley Tucci.

Streep added a humorous caveat to the discussion, joking, “They have to be alive.”

The comments come as The Devil Wears Prada 2 continues its theatrical release, reuniting Streep as the formidable editor-in-chief Miranda Priestly, Hathaway as Andy Sachs, and Blunt as Emily Charlton, now a powerful executive in the fashion industry.

Reflecting on revisiting their roles after two decades, Hathaway said the experience felt markedly different from her early career.

“When we made the first one, I was just a 22-year-old mess,” she said. “I feel like my life is in a much more complete and whole place now.”

Streep described returning to Miranda Priestly as a familiar process. “I think you keep these characters,” she said. “I liked discovering her again.”

Blunt also spoke fondly of stepping back into her role. “You are sort of fused with this person you’re playing,” she said. “I had a lot of fun slithering back into her shoes.”
