Missouri retreat leader faces expanding charges in multi-year abuse investigation
The investigation remains ongoing as prosecutors prepare for further legal proceedings
Authorities in Missouri have filed multiple criminal charges against an Amish retreat leader accused of a range of serious offenses following a multi-year investigation into his conduct at a religious retreat.
Sam Shetler, 42, who led the Mercy and Truth Amish and Mennonite Retreat in Cooper County, was first arrested in March after investigators executed a search warrant tied to allegations of abuse, coercion, and misconduct within the facility, according to the Cooper County Sheriff’s Office.
Officials allege Shetler used his position of authority to manipulate and control vulnerable individuals for personal gain.
He initially faced charges including trafficking for forced labor and sexual offenses, with prosecutors later adding additional counts as the investigation expanded.
Court documents and statements cited by local media indicate that multiple individuals have accused Shetler of misconduct spanning several years, including allegations of coercion, forced labor, and inappropriate physical and sexual conduct.
Investigators also reviewed claims related to his conduct while presenting himself as having medical or healing expertise.
Authorities further allege that individuals under his care were subjected to severe restrictions and exploitation at the retreat.
Prosecutors later expanded the case to include additional kidnapping, sexual abuse, and involuntary manslaughter-related charges.
Shetler has pleaded not guilty to all charges. Officials say the investigation remains ongoing, and further legal proceedings are expected in the coming months.
