B.J. Novak breaks silence on ‘fascination’ around Mindy Kaling bond

B. J. Novak has addressed the long-running public curiosity surrounding his close bond with Mindy Kaling and made it clear he has no intention of shutting the conversation down.

In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Novak acknowledged the intense interest in their relationship, which dates back to their time on The Office in 2004. “I totally know it,” he said of the ongoing fascination.

Rather than avoid the topic, Novak explained that he takes a more open approach when questions arise. Referencing The Let Them Theory by Mel Robbins, he added, “If people ask me about my life, I answer… Let them.”

“I’m not going to tell someone that question is off limits,” Novak continued, emphasizing his willingness to engage even when the focus remains on his personal life.

The actor and filmmaker has previously described his connection with Kaling as “a really complicated friendship,” but one he deeply values.

Over the years, their bond has extended beyond Hollywood, with Novak serving as godfather to Kaling’s daughter, Katherine ‘Kit’ Swati.

The pair have remained a constant in each other’s lives since their early sitcom days, often sparking speculation among fans about the nature of their relationship.

Novak, however, appears unfazed by the attention, choosing transparency over avoidance.

Beyond his personal life, Novak is currently starring in The Devil Wears Prada 2, where he plays Jay Ravitz, a businessman notably out of place in the high-fashion world depicted in the film.

Reflecting on the role, Novak joked about his own background, noting that he hails from Boston, “which is not a very fashion-forward place,” adding that his character’s awkward style made him a fitting choice for the part.
