Javier Bardem and Penélope Cruz reveal why they avoid talking about work at home
The couple Bardem have been married since 2010 and often work together on screen
Javier Bardem and Penélope Cruz have revealed that, despite being one of Hollywood’s most celebrated couples, they deliberately avoid discussing their work once they leave the set.
The Oscar-winning actors, who have been married since 2010, shared that they maintain a clear boundary between their professional and personal lives, even though they have collaborated on multiple projects over the years.
Speaking in a recent interview with Variety, Bardem said the couple consciously avoids bringing their film careers into their home life.
“At home, we don’t talk much about work,” he explained, adding that they prefer not to surround themselves with reminders of their profession.
“We don’t have posters or photos or anything that reminds us of what we do for a living,” he said. “We try to compartmentalise life and fiction.”
Despite that separation, Bardem noted that working alongside Cruz remains a meaningful experience when it does happen, describing it as a chance to reconnect amid busy personal and professional lives.
The pair have shared the screen in several films, including Vicky Cristina Barcelona and their upcoming psychological thriller Bunker.
Bardem said the experience of collaborating with his wife often brings a renewed sense of presence and connection.
“Sometimes you are immersed in your daily life… and it’s like—when do you sit down and look at each other again?” he said, reflecting on the value of working together.
Cruz has expressed similar views in past interviews, noting that while working with Bardem is built on trust and shared creative understanding, it is not something they want to do constantly.
The Academy Award winner previously said she enjoys collaborating with her husband but believes the dynamic works best in moderation.
“It’s a great experience,” she told Collider, “but it’s not something we want to do all of the time.”
Cruz, who won an Oscar for her role in Vicky Cristina Barcelona, added that they choose projects together only when it feels right for both of them, rather than making it a regular practice.
