German Shepherd kills rabid Bobcat while saving owner in Arizona attack

A German Shepherd is being credited with saving its owner after a rabid bobcat attacked both of them during a series of aggressive wildlife incidents in an Arizona neighborhood earlier this week.

The attack occurred on Monday morning, May 4, in the Prescott area, when a woman was out walking her dog, Moses, and was suddenly confronted by the animal.

“This cat came at me and jumped me,” the woman, who asked to remain anonymous, told local station 12 News.

“I thought it was a coyote because we don’t have bobcats around here. So, I pushed it away and it came right back.”

According to the owner, the situation escalated quickly as the bobcat scratched her and knocked her to the ground. It was then that Moses intervened, ultimately killing the animal in the driveway.

“I was afraid. I kept saying go, go, go to Moses,” she said. “I wanted him to get away, but when I got back he had killed the bobcat.”

Authorities later confirmed that the animal tested positive for rabies after being taken to the Arizona Game and Fish Department.

Despite being vaccinated, Moses will now undergo a six-week quarantine period as a precaution.

The owner is also receiving medical treatment for her injuries, which she described as painful but not life-threatening.

“He’s an amazing dog and he’s also very sweet,” she said, praising her pet’s actions during the attack.

Local officials reported that the incident was part of a troubling series of four bobcat attacks in the Prescott area within hours.

According to the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office, one man suffered significant injuries on Sunday evening, while two additional attacks, including the one involving Moses, occurred the following day.

Authorities said it is unclear whether the same animal was responsible for all incidents, though they noted the behavior is highly unusual.

“Because this is extremely rare behavior for bobcats, it is likely the same animal was involved in all four incidents,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement.

Residents in the area have been urged to remain cautious, avoid wildlife contact, and seek immediate medical attention in the event of any animal attack.
