'Avengers: Doomsday’ director Joe Russo critiques spoiler hysteria

Joe Russo, one half of the filmmaking team responsible for "Avengers: Doomsday," recently expressed to Metro that he believes spoilers are monitored too strictly online, making fans hesitant to interact with any content related to a movie before its theater release.

“On one side, viewers crave the thrill of surprise, which is a key aspect of what makes going to the movies so thrilling,” Russo remarked.

“Conversely, it can become excessively regulated, causing people to worry about engaging with any material.”

He continued, “These films are crafted to develop in a specific manner, and we aim for audiences to experience those moments as we intended. However, you can't always maintain control over everything. The priority is to create something that remains engaging beyond the initial revelation.”

“Avengers: Doomsday” resembles a subtle reboot for the MCU, acting as Marvel’s effort to return to its peak of box office success after less favorable outcomes like “Captain America: Brave New World,” “Thunderbolts*” and “The Fantastic Four First Steps.” To achieve that, Marvel has gathered a lineup of franchise stars, including Chris Evans (Captain America), Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Paul Rudd (Ant-Man), Tom Hiddleston (Loki), Patrick Stewart (Professor X), Ian McKellen (Magneto), Letitia Wright (Black Panther), and Rebecca Romijn (Mystique). They have even brought back Robert Downey Jr. in the role of the formidable Doctor Doom, following his character's demise as Iron Man in 2019’s “Avengers: Endgame.”

“Doomsday” is scheduled to premiere on December 18. Russo, alongside his brother Anthony, will also co-direct the follow-up, “Avengers: Secret Wars,” set for a December 17, 2027 release in theaters.
