Nintendo unveils new Star Fox for Switch 2

Nintendo has officially announced the return of its long-dormant Star Fox franchise, revealing the first new entry in the series in more than a decade.

The game, titled Star Fox, is set to launch on June 25 and appears to be a modern reimagining of the beloved 1997 classic Star Fox 64.

The announcement follows months of speculation fueled by Fox McCloud’s cameo appearance in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, which many fans now see as an early tease for the revival.

Nintendo says the upcoming title is “inspired” by Star Fox 64, combining familiar gameplay and level designs with upgraded visuals, enhanced mechanics, and new multiplayer features.

Early footage showcased dramatically improved graphics and redesigned character models, including a notably more realistic version of fan-favourite Slippy Toad.

The iconic in-cockpit banter between pilots also returns, preserving one of the series’ signature elements.

Alongside the traditional Arwing spacecraft, players will be able to control additional vehicles such as submarines during certain missions.

The reboot introduces several modern additions, including online support for the franchise’s four-versus-four dogfighting multiplayer mode.

Nintendo is also adding mouse controls and interactive character avatars for online sessions.

According to the company, the avatars can mirror players’ facial expressions and movements through GameChat integration.

For longtime fans seeking a nostalgic experience, the game will also support Nintendo’s N64-style controller.

The release arrives during a relatively quiet period for Nintendo’s first-party lineup on the Switch 2.

Aside from Star Fox, upcoming titles currently include Yoshi and the Mysterious Book, Rhythm Heaven Groove, Splatoon Raiders, and Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave.
