Anthropic CEO attributes compute challenges to 80x growth in Q1
Anthropic's remarkable expansion stems from widespread popularity of its Claude AI models
Anthropic's CEO Dario Amodei shared that the company anticipated a growth of 10 times.
However, annualised revenue and use saw an 80-fold increase in the first quarter, which clarifies why they've struggled to meet the demand.
"That's the reason we've encountered challenges with computing resources," Amodei explained Wednesday during the developer conference in San Francisco.
He also mentioned that the company is "moving swiftly to expand" their capacity and will "provide that compute to you as soon as it's ready."
These remarks followed closely after Anthropic revealed a partnership with Elon Musk's SpaceX to utilise the entire computing power of his company's Colossus 1 data center in Memphis, Tennessee.
Under this arrangement, Anthropic will gain access to over 300 megawatts of capacity. SpaceX owns a competing AI lab known as SpaceXAI.
Anthropic's remarkable expansion stems from the widespread popularity of its Claude AI models and the significant surge following last year's launch of Claude Code, which has greatly impacted software development.
The company is currently negotiating with investors to secure funding at a $900 billion valuation, previously reported by CNBC, potentially surpassing OpenAI in worth.
"Software developers are typically the quickest to embrace new tech," Amodei stated on stage. "This predicts how the economy will integrate new technologies and how AI will transform economic structures."
Recently, Anthropic disclosed that the rising demand for Claude has placed "unavoidable stress on our systems," affecting "service reliability and performance" for users, especially during peak periods.
The company has finalised several computing agreements lately, including a multi-billion-dollar contract with Amazon.
Meanwhile, Anthropic has been handling a turbulent relationship with the US government and the Pentagon, which labelled the company a supply chain risk in March, banning it from military collaborations. Despite the ongoing legal wrangle, Anthropic's popularity continues to grow.
Amodei commented on the unprecedented growth, calling it "insane" and "difficult to manage," expressing to the audience a desire for "more stable" growth.
