Massachusetts State Trooper killed by wrong-way driver in Lynnfield

A Massachusetts State Police trooper was killed by a wrong-way driver minutes after his shift was scheduled to end on Wednesday.

Trooper Kevin Trainor, 30, had begun his commute home shortly before 2:00am when he received a call reporting a vehicle travelling south on Route 1 North in Lynnfield.

Despite having just completed his duty, Trainor responded to the emergency. Colonel Geoffrey Noble noted during a press conference that the trooper "did what anyone would do on duty or off duty," demonstrating a final commitment to public safety.

The fatal encounter unfolded rapidly; a 911 call was logged at 2:01am, and by 2:04 a.m., the wrong-way vehicle collided with Trainor's cruiser.

The trooper was rushed to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

The driver of the other vehicle, identified as 50-year-old Hernan Marrero, also did not survive the crash.

Governor Maura Healey met with Trainor’s devastated family, including his fiancée and mother, remarking that the young officer belonged to a family deeply rooted in public service.

Trooper Trainor graduated from the academy in 2023 and had already earned a place in the Troop A Community Action Team.

Before joining the state police, he served as a corrections officer in Essex County. Colonel Noble praised his bravery, stating that his actions undoubtedly prevented an even greater tragedy on the road.

The vehicle remains in police custody for processing as the investigation continues into the circumstances of the reckless driving that claimed a hero's life.
