Trial begins for Pennsylvania mother in 'torture' death of adopted son
Landon Maloberti died in 2023 after suffering catastrophic brain bleeding and multiple bruises
The trial of Lauren Maloberti, a 36-year-old Pennsylvania mother accused of killing her 5-year-old adopted son, Landon, opened on Tuesday, 5 May, with disturbing allegations of systemic abuse.
Prosecutors told jurors that Landon was "isolated, mistreated, terrorized and killed," alleging the child was deprived of nutrition, forced to forage for food, and even made to drink from a toilet.
The 2023 death was the culmination of what medical professionals described as "torture," citing dozens of bruises and catastrophic brain injuries found when the boy was brought to the hospital.
Assistant District Attorney Cassidy Hatten argued that Lauren Maloberti failed to seek prompt medical treatment as Landon’s condition deteriorated.
When she eventually arrived at the hospital on 30 January 2023, the child was reportedly unresponsive and "slung over her shoulder." Despite being transferred to UPMC Children’s Hospital in Pittsburgh, Landon died one week later.
Witnesses, including the defendant’s sister-in-law, testified to a shift in Lauren's behaviour, noting she became increasingly impatient and complained that the child frequently misbehaved and lacked affection.
The defence, led by attorney Adam Gorzelsky, countered that prosecutors cannot prove exactly what caused the fatal injuries, suggesting the investigation was insufficient.
However, the prosecution's case is bolstered by the expected testimony of Lauren’s husband, Jacob Maloberti, who also faces charges in connection with the death.
If convicted of first-degree murder, Lauren Maloberti faces a mandatory sentence of life in prison without parole. The trial continues as more witnesses are expected to detail the environment inside the Maloberti household leading up to the tragedy.
