'Mortal Kombat II' dominates box office on opening day

The film “Mortal Kombat II” smashed its way to first place at the box office on its release day.

This fantasy movie, following up on the 2021 film, garnered $17 million on Friday, according to Box Office Mojo.

The Post described the movie — the fourth in a series inspired by the popular video game — as “a chaotic mess on screen” and “a headache of endless battles and foolish characters.”

Yet, it still managed to outshine “The Devil Wears Prada 2,” which slipped to second place, earning $9.8 million on its second Friday in theaters.

The sequel to the 2006 comedy — featuring stars like Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, and Emily Blunt who all reportedly earned $12.5 million to return to their iconic roles — had the third-highest domestic opening of the year.

Third in line was the Michael Jackson biographical film, “Michael,” which pulled in $8.8 million during its third Friday in cinemas.

The movie has made waves as the second music biopic to cross the $500 million mark worldwide, following “Bohemian Rhapsody,” the film about Queen’s legendary frontman Freddie Mercury, as reported by Screen Rant.

“Billie Eilish: Hit Me Hard and Soft – The Tour Live in 3D,” a concert film featuring her 2025 tour performances, claimed fourth place with $4.5 million.

Eilish shared that the concert film concept came from co-director James Cameron, who “emailed my mom because his wife is friends with her, or they had collaborated previously,” she confirmed with People.

“He already had the complete vision. He wondered, ‘Why has no one filmed Billie’s concert in 3D? Is it possible? Can I do it?’”

In fifth position was “The Sheep Detectives,” which brought in just over $4 million.

The Post lauded the film, featuring Hugh Jackman, as a “delightful animal detective story.”
