Alabama man receives maximum sentence following brutal gas station abduction
Ibraheem Yazeed was sentenced to life in prison on Thursday in Alabama
An Alabama man has been sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the 2019 kidnapping and murder of 19-year-old college student Aniah Blanchard.
Ibraheem Yazeed, 36, received the maximum allowable sentence on Thursday, after a jury convicted him of capital murder, felony murder, and kidnapping. The sentencing marks the conclusion of a case that has profoundly impacted Alabama’s judicial system and legislative landscape.
The tragic events unfolded on 23 October 2019, when Yazeed abducted Ms Blanchard from a gas station in Auburn.
Surveillance footage showed the defendant waiting for the student before forcing his way into her vehicle. Prosecutors stated that Yazeed shot Ms Blanchard before abandoning her car in Montgomery and enlisting help to hide her remains in a wooded area in Macon County.
Her body was discovered approximately one month later, following an intensive multi-agency search. "Today, justice has been served," Attorney General Steve Marshall stated, noting that the sentence was demanded by the "weight of this crime."
Ms Blanchard’s mother, Angela Harris, told reporters that her daughter "fought a very violent criminal" and successfully "got him off the streets."
At the time of the attack, Yazeed was remarkably out on bond for separate kidnapping and attempted murder charges.
This sparked the creation of "Aniah’s Law," a constitutional amendment approved by Alabama voters that empowers judges to deny bond for individuals accused of several violent offences.
While the verdict cannot undo the family's loss, officials hope it provides a measure of closure for the community and those who loved the young student.
