Bridgerton's back in 2027: Season 5 to centre on Francesca's groundbreaking sapphic romance

Netflix has confirmed Bridgerton will be back for its fifth season in 2027, marking the show's quickest return yet and placing a historic queer love story at its very heart.

Francesca's story takes centre stage

The ton is abuzz with confirmation that season five of the hit period drama will focus on the romance between Francesca Bridgerton and Michaela Stirling. English actress Hannah Dodd, who took over the role of the quietly observant Francesca in the third season, will return to lead the story.

She will be joined by South African actress Masali Baduza, known for her powerful roles in "Noughts + Crosses" and the historical epic "The Woman King," who has been cast as the captivating Michaela.

The announcement confirms that the series will adapt the sixth book in Julia Quinn's series, "When He Was Wicked," but with a significant narrative change: the male character Michael Stirling has been reimagined as Michaela, setting the stage for the show’s first central same-sex romance.

The storyline is set to take place two years after the unexpected death of Francesca’s first husband, John Stirling, Earl of Kilmartin (Victor Alli), with the plot exploring her re-entry into the marriage market and her burgeoning feelings for his charismatic cousin. Showrunner Jess Brownell, who also guided seasons three and four, has described the upcoming season as being "about yearning," telling E! News that creating an entire season based on a sapphic relationship feels "huge."

A record-breaking return for a global hit

Fans will be delighted to hear that the wait for the new season will be shorter than ever. Netflix officially announced at its May 13 upfront presentation that Bridgerton will return in 2027.

This breaks the established two-year gap between seasons for the first time since the show premiered in 2020, a detail highlighted with on-screen text proclaiming it the "QUICKEST RETURN YET" in a promotional clip released by E! News. The accelerated schedule suggests production, which reportedly began in March 2026, is well underway to bring the highly anticipated story to screens.

The Regency-era drama, produced by Shonda Rhimes's Shondaland, has been a global phenomenon for the streaming giant. Previous seasons have shattered viewership records, with season two becoming the most-watched English-language series on the platform at the time of its release.

The show has long been praised for its diverse casting, which challenges traditional portrayals of the era, and the introduction of a central queer love story continues this commitment to inclusive storytelling.

The decision to gender-swap a key character has, however, sparked significant discussion among the show's dedicated fanbase. With a sixth season also confirmed by Netflix, it seems the Bridgerton family's scandalous and romantic affairs will continue to grace our screens for some time to come.
