Authorities are continuing their investigation after the cyclist’s death in hospital
A father of three has died days after police say he was deliberately struck by a car while cycling in Norwich, leaving family, friends and colleagues mourning what they described as a “tragic loss.”
Richard Smith, 50, died in hospital on Monday after suffering serious head injuries during the incident on May 8, according to Norfolk Constabulary.
Police said Smith was cycling along Chartwell Road at around 5 p.m. local time when he was allegedly hit by a white Mercedes CLA 180 Sport vehicle. Authorities stated the collision was believed to have been deliberate.
Emergency responders rushed Smith to hospital in critical condition, where he remained for several days before succumbing to his injuries.
Following the incident, David Morgan, 40, of George Winter Court, was charged with attempted murder and driving with excess alcohol. He appeared before Norwich Magistrates’ Court and was remanded into custody ahead of a scheduled appearance at Norwich Crown Court on June 8.
Police said they are now consulting with the Crown Prosecution Service regarding the charges following Smith’s death. Investigators have also appealed for witnesses, dashcam footage and any additional information related to the crash.
In a heartfelt tribute shared through Norfolk Constabulary, Smith’s family remembered him as a devoted father, partner and friend whose loss has devastated those closest to him.
“A much loved partner, dad, brother, son, friend and colleague has sadly died after an incident on Friday May 8th 2026,” the family said in a statement.
“We are all struggling to make sense of such a tragic loss to all of our lives.”
The family described Smith as a passionate supporter of Norwich City F.C., as well as a blood and organ donor who took pride in raising his three children.
“We will remember him with love and kindness and for some truly terrible dance moves,” the tribute added.
Smith worked as a UK sales manager for Delta Fire, which also paid tribute to its late employee in a statement shared online.
“It is with great sadness that we share the news that our much loved colleague, Richard Smith, passed away yesterday following a road traffic incident,” the company wrote.
“Richard was a valued member of our team and will be deeply missed by everyone who had the privilege of working with him.”
The company said it is supporting staff members as they come to terms with the loss, while messages of condolence also poured in from members of the local community and emergency services.
