Apple tests iPhone 19 Pro with a quad-curved OLED screen and under-display Face ID sensor
Apple's iPhone 19 Pro prototype hides Face ID under the screen while retaining a punch-hole selfie camera
Apple is reportedly testing an iPhone 19 Pro prototype featuring a quad-curved OLED display that conceals Face ID beneath the screen, whilst retaining a visible punch-hole cutout for the selfie camera, according to leakers tracking the company's design roadmap.
A borderless ambition ahead of the 20th anniversary
The prototype represents Apple's most recent effort to realise its vision of a fully edge-to-edge display before the iPhone reaches its 20th anniversary in 2027.
However, integrating the front-facing camera whilst maintaining image quality remains an ongoing challenge.
The quad-curved design is expected to feature curves on all four sides of the screen, creating a virtually borderless appearance once closely associated with flagship Android devices.
Apple had previously opted for a flat-screen design, but has since reversed course in pursuit of a more seamless and uninterrupted display experience.
Face ID progress and the selfie camera problem
Apple has made significant strides in embedding its Face ID technology beneath the display, but the selfie camera continues to present difficulties for some users.
The company has reportedly invested considerable time and resources into integrating the Face ID sensor without any compromise to image quality.
A strategy echoing 2017
According to reports, Apple intends to adopt a launch strategy similar to the one it used in 2017, when the iPhone 8 and iPhone X were released simultaneously to mark the smartphone's tenth anniversary.
Under the new plan, the iPhone 19 Pro would launch with a punch-hole camera, with all cutouts eliminated in the 2027 iPhone model.
