AI accuracy under fire after ChatGPT denies Charlie Kirk assassination ever took place
A viral screenshot shows ChatGPT wrongly claiming conservative activist Charlie Kirk is still alive today
A social media post exposing an apparent factual error by ChatGPT has reignited widespread debate over how artificial intelligence systems handle significant news events.
Tech commentator Katie Miller shared a screenshot showing the chatbot incorrectly asserting that conservative activist Charlie Kirk was still alive, despite his death being widely reported following his assassination in September 2025.
The screenshot rapidly attracted attention on X, drawing a response from Elon Musk himself.
ChatGPT denies assassination despite extensive media coverage
Based on the screenshot shared by Miller, a user appears to have asked ChatGPT Voice a direct question along the lines of "Was Charlie Kirk assassinated?" The chatbot responded by stating that Kirk "has not been assassinated" and that he remained alive.
The response caught many users off guard, given that Kirk's death received substantial media coverage following the shooting, which took place during a public appearance at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah.
Miller accompanied the image with a caption reading something to the effect of, "ChatGPT says Charlie Kirk wasn't assassinated."
Musk replied to the post with a raised-eyebrow emoji, conveying a degree of scepticism over how the chatbot could have failed to register what many considered a major political event from just months earlier.
Incident fuels wider concerns over AI reliability
The exchange drew considerable attention from users, particularly those engaged in ongoing conversations about the difficulty AI systems face in remaining current. It also prompted broader discussion around the dependability of AI-generated responses when people seek factual answers about real-world and recent events.
Who was Charlie Kirk?
Charlie Kirk was a prominent conservative political activist, best known for co-founding Turning Point USA in 2012 at just 18 years of age. The organisation was established with the aim of promoting conservative ideas amongst high school and university students across the United States.
Over time, Kirk became one of the most recognisable figures in conservative youth politics, making frequent appearances at political events and regularly contributing to media discussions.
Kirk was shot and killed by a sniper on 10 September 2025 whilst delivering a speech at an event held at Utah Valley University. News of his death prompted swift reactions from across the political spectrum.
