Michelle Obama jokes that Malia will never invite her and Barack to anything she does
  • Michelle Obama said Malia never invites her or Barack to anything connected to her work
  • Malia Obama, 27, has written for TV series Swarm and directed her own short film The Heart
  • Barack visited Spielberg's Disclosure Day set, his first ever visit to a project in Malia's industry

Michelle Obama has spoken candidly about her daughter Malia Obama's growing career in the entertainment industry, revealing that the young filmmaker deliberately keeps her parents at arm's length from her professional work.

Malia, 27, who works professionally under the name Malia Ann, has been carving out a path in the film and television world in recent years. She previously worked as a writer on the TV series Swarm and has since directed her own short film, The Heart.

Malia will "never invite us to anything"

Speaking on her podcast IMO alongside her brother Craig Robinson, Michelle made the lighthearted confession during a conversation with acclaimed director Steven Spielberg.

"She doesn't want us around her stuff," Michelle said. "She will never invite us to anything that she does."

The moment was prompted by Spielberg mentioning that former US president Barack Obama had recently visited the set of his upcoming film Disclosure Day — the first set visit Barack had ever made in connection with his daughter's industry.

"Even though your daughter is a filmmaker, Malia. So I feel bad I scooped Malia," Spielberg told Michelle, to which she responded: "She doesn't care. She will never invite us to anything that she does. You know, she doesn't want us around her stuff."

Barack's playful threat over early screening

Michelle also shared an amusing insight into her husband's close friendship with Spielberg, joking that Barack has a habit of being blunt about his opinions on the director's films.

"My husband is a bully to you when it comes to your movies," she said, adding, "I always reprimand him … because you haven't let him see [your latest film] and he's very mad about that."

Spielberg revealed that Barack had made a tongue-in-cheek threat regarding the film, warning that he would watch it on a vertically held iPhone if he was not granted an early screening.

"Yeah, he said if he wasn't among the first to see it, he was going to watch it only on an iPhone," Spielberg shared, with Michelle adding: "Which he knows would irritate you." Spielberg quipped in return: "And he said he wouldn't watch it horizontally, he'd only watch it vertically."

Cast left speechless by Barack's set visit

Spielberg also recalled the reaction of his cast when the former president arrived on set, noting that many actors were rendered completely silent by his presence.

Disclosure Day, which is due for release on 12 June, stars Emily Blunt, Colin Firth, and Colman Domingo.
