The thirty-six-year-old actor Daniel Radcliffe has revealed that he is now actively searching for characters that push him well outside his normal boundaries and provide a genuine sense of difficulty.

The screen star candidly discussed this creative choice during a recent conversation, explaining that he deliberately aims to accept professional work that terrifies him so he can avoid settling into a predictable routine within his acting career.

“Every few years, I want to do something that really scares the s*** out of me," the Harry Potter alum told People.

The seasoned performer shared these thoughts whilst reflecting on his latest theatrical endeavour on Broadway, where he took the lead in Every Brilliant Thing.

The unique production is a one-person play that relies heavily on direct engagement with the theatre audience.

Finding the Performance Sweet Spot

Radcliffe noted that his primary interest lies in securing projects where a portion of the persona feels entirely instinctive, whilst a separate component remains completely strange and demanding.

He characterised this specific equilibrium as the perfect motivator for his ongoing theatrical development.

“You can get to phases in your career where you feel like you're a little too comfortable, and doing something you're afraid of jolts you out of your complacency. And this definitely is that for me.

He continued, “Whenever I find something where a part of sits very, very naturally for me and it feels like my voice and the character's voice are pretty close together, but there's also one element to it that is completely alien and completely outside my comfort zone, that's a real sweet spot for me."

The actor further remarked that placing himself in uneasy professional situations ensures he remains fully concentrated on his craft, preventing him from ever growing lazy with his performances.

"That's when I get excited as an actor and know I'm up for a challenge," he added.

Connecting with the Broadway Audience

Furthermore, Radcliffe admitted that he felt quite hesitant at first regarding the prospect of leading a solo production on stage.

However, he ultimately altered his perspective due to the profound, intimate bond the piece establishes with the theatregoers in attendance.

"I have not done something like this before. And to be honest, I had very little interest in doing something that would just be me on my own telling lines in front of an audience. It's the connection that this show makes you have with the audience is what made me want to do it.

Before the start of each theatrical session, he dedicated time to conversing directly with members of the crowd to integrate them into the live storytelling.

This pre-show behaviour, he realised, transformed the entire experience into a far more inclusive, transparent, and captivating event for everyone inside the venue.
