Former Penn State player Kyle Vasey hospitalised after driver kills his fiancée
Kyle Vasey's fiancée, Corinne More, was killed after a driver allegedly targeted the couple during a morning walk
Former Penn State American football player Kyle Vasey has been hospitalised after a man allegedly drove his vehicle deliberately into a group of pedestrians in Colorado, killing Vasey's fiancée, Corinne More, and another woman.
The attack
Vasey, 30, and More, 35, were taking a morning walk in their Colorado neighbourhood at around 10:30 a.m. local time on Monday, when 28-year-old Adam Bauserman allegedly mounted the pavement and drove into them and a third pedestrian. Bauserman was reportedly already driving on a suspended licence stemming from a prior drink-driving conviction, according to CBS News.
Following the collision, witnesses told the outlet that the driver executed a U-turn and slowly drove back past the scene to survey the damage before fleeing. Members of the public reportedly followed Bauserman for more than five miles to Daniels Park, where he was taken into custody by police.
Vasey's condition
Vasey sustained severe injuries, including three spinal fractures and four broken ribs. A doctor stated in an affidavit that he faces a substantial risk of permanent disfigurement or death, according to CBS. A GoFundMe established by his parents, Bruce and Shelley Vasey, provided an update on his condition.
"Kyle endured multiple fractures all over his body. His left arm was the only limb not injured. So far he has had six surgeries. At this point, he's still on a ventilator and is sedated to help manage the pain while his body recovers."
His parents also offered a degree of cautious optimism: "Thankfully, there was no major head trauma, and everyone is optimistic about his physical recovery."
Two fatalities
More died as a result of her injuries. A third victim, 72-year-old Dianne Windes, also passed away, according to CBS. Douglas County Sheriff Darren Weekly described the scene in stark terms. "This was a horrific scene."
Police believe Bauserman had no prior connection to any of the victims. Deputies noted that he was "unusually quiet" following his arrest and allegedly asked officers whether he had "killed the man" during their conversation with him.
Appeal for support
Vasey's parents used the GoFundMe page to appeal for support as medical costs continue to mount.
"However, it is expected to be a long road of recovery. His beautiful fiancée did not survive. At this time, we are asking for your thoughts and prayers for a speedy recovery of his body, heart, and mind. However, any donations to help with his ever-climbing medical bills would be greatly appreciated." As of Tuesday, the fundraiser had surpassed $31,000 of its $40,000 target.
Charges and bail
Bauserman has been charged with seven felonies and one misdemeanour, according to the Douglas County Sheriff's Office. The charges include vehicular homicide, failure to remain at the scene of an accident involving death, two counts of vehicular assault, second-degree assault against an at-risk person, and driving a motor vehicle with a suspended licence. His bail has been set at $100,000.
