Karmelo Anthony sentenced to 35 years for murder of Austin Metcalf

Texas teenager Karmelo Anthony has been sentenced to 35 years in prison after being convicted of fatally stabbing fellow student Austin Metcalf during a high school track meet in April 2025. The sentence was handed down hours after a jury rejected Anthony’s claim of self-defense. He will be eligible for parole after serving half of his term, as reported by People.

Austin’s mother, Meghan Metcalf, delivered a powerful victim impact statement as per NBC 5, telling Anthony, “You may have just been given a sentence of 35 years, you should feel lucky because I’ve been sentenced to a life without my son”. She remembered her son as a “peacemaker” and “protector,” recalling their final morning together before his death.

Austin’s twin brother, Hunter, also spoke in court, admitting he has struggled with forgiveness and turned to his faith to cope. He told Anthony, “You took everything from me. I wake up every morning and his door is still shut”.

Austin’s father, Jeff Metcalf, described his son as “a friend, a leader, and a true warrior.” He condemned Anthony directly, saying, “You failed your parents, yourself, and society. You don’t belong in this community”. Jeff also revealed that his family has faced harassment since Austin’s death, including multiple swatting calls.

Details of the crime

According to a probable cause affidavit, the confrontation began when Austin asked Anthony to move from beneath a tent reserved for his track team. Witnesses said the two did not know each other prior to the incident. Anthony allegedly responded by reaching into his backpack and warning, “Touch me and see what happens”. When Austin attempted to move him, Anthony pulled out a knife and stabbed him in the chest.

Anthony later admitted to stabbing Metcalf, telling officers, “He put his hands on me. I told him not to”. His defense team argued he was protecting himself, but the jury ultimately rejected that claim.

Aftermath

Austin Metcalf was just 17 years old at the time of his death. His family continues to honor his memory, describing him as a protector, leader, and beloved son. The sentencing marks the end of a painful trial, but for the Metcalf family, the loss remains immeasurable.
