Georgia man found guilty after woman escaped hotel room attack and ran for help
The woman escaped the alleged assault and reached a hotel employee, who called 911 and helped her
A Georgia man has been convicted of assault and false imprisonment after authorities said he attacked his romantic partner inside a hotel room and prevented her from leaving.
Desmond Jamal Camp, 37, was convicted on Thursday, June 11, of family violence, aggravated assault and false imprisonment in connection with the April 2025 incident, according to the Blue Ridge Judicial Circuit District Attorney's Office.
The attack happened at a Quality Inn in Canton, Georgia, where the woman was staying while working nearby, prosecutors said.
According to officials, the woman returned to her hotel room after work and planned to sleep when Camp allegedly insisted on having sex.
When she refused, prosecutors said the situation escalated into a violent confrontation.
Authorities said Camp attempted to remove her clothing and later held a knife against her throat.
The woman told police she suffered cuts to her hand during the attack, with blood found on the bed as investigators examined the scene.
At one point, the woman was able to escape when Camp became distracted. She ran to the hotel front desk, where an employee called 911 and moved her to a secure area.
When officers from the Canton Police Department arrived, they found the woman injured and covered with a blanket.
Prosecutors said her clothing had been cut open during the attack, leaving her partially exposed.
Investigators said the woman’s account matched evidence collected at the scene, including the reported knife, blood evidence, and injuries.
Camp was arrested after police said he fled the hotel and attempted to enter an interstate.
Following a two-day trial, a jury convicted Camp of family violence aggravated assault and false imprisonment.
He was acquitted of two additional counts of family violence, aggravated assault and one count of family violence battery.
Camp is scheduled to be sentenced later this month.
