Indiana man jailed for 60 years after fatal roommate stabbing
Man convicted of murdering roommate after argument over sleeping arrangements in Fort Wayne
Indiana man Draylon Marquise Crutchfield, 26, has been sentenced to 60 years in prison after a jury found him guilty of murdering his 18-year-old roommate during a violent dispute over sleeping arrangements in Fort Wayne.
Reportedly, Allen Superior Court Judge Fran Gull handed down the sentence on Friday, following a conviction last month for the July 2025 killing of Muhammad A. Williams.
The fatal incident occurred at an apartment complex on Stardale Drive in Fort Wayne’s Oakland Park neighbourhood, where police were called after reports of a stabbing.
Officers arrived to find Williams suffering multiple stab wounds. He was transported to hospital in life-threatening condition but later died from his injuries.
According to court evidence and a probable cause affidavit, the confrontation began as a verbal argument over where Williams would sleep inside the apartment.
Witnesses said the dispute escalated when Williams told Crutchfield, “Don’t be going to sleep on my mama’s couch,” followed by threats of violence. Crutchfield told investigators the disagreement continued for several minutes before turning physical.
During the argument, Williams was holding an infant, who was later handed to another person as tensions rose.
Witness testimony and Crutchfield’s own statement indicated that Williams became increasingly aggressive, allegedly saying, “I finna beat the s– out of you man. I’ve been waiting on this s–.”
Crutchfield told police he was already holding a kitchen knife at the time and warned Williams not to approach him. He claimed Williams struck first, leading to a brief struggle.
A witness told investigators the confrontation lasted only seconds before Crutchfield stabbed Williams. The defendant later said he could not recall how many times he stabbed the victim, describing it as an “unknown number” of blows, citing blurred vision after being punched.
After the stabbing, Williams ran outside while Crutchfield followed with the knife still in hand. He later approached neighbours covered in blood and admitted he had stabbed his roommate during the altercation.
Crutchfield’s defence argued he acted in response to being attacked, but the jury rejected that claim when returning a murder conviction.
Williams was pronounced dead following emergency treatment at a local hospital.
