Suspect arrested 15 minutes after fatal Birmingham barbershop shooting on Saturday
An Alabama father was shot dead in front of his family on Saturday, June 13, during an argument at a barbershop in Birmingham.
The shooting happened just after 3.30 pm local time outside La Vida Barberia Spa y Estilismo on West Valley Avenue, according to AL.com and WBRC.
How the shooting happened
Police Sergeant LaQuitta Wade, of the Birmingham Police Department, told AL.com that officers and medical personnel were sent to the scene after a report of a man being shot.
Investigators believe the victim and the suspect knew each other. The two reportedly got into a physical altercation outside the barbershop. During the fight, the suspect pulled out a gun and shot the victim.
Victim identified
Police said on Sunday that they had identified the victim as 34-year-old Jorge Fonseca, a Birmingham resident. Paramedics attempted lifesaving measures when they arrived at the scene. Fonseca was pronounced dead on the sidewalk outside the shop.
Police said the shooter fled the scene after the shooting. He was taken into custody around 15 minutes later. The suspect's identity has not been made public.
Several customers were inside the barbershop when the fatal altercation broke out. According to AL.com, this included members of the victim's family. Witnesses were brought in by investigators for questioning.
