US Citizen arrested in Colombia over child abuse allegations in Bogotá
A 36-year-old American man from Texas has been arrested in Bogotá, Colombia, after authorities accused him of sexually abusing a child, according to local officials.
CBS News reported the suspect was detained on Sunday following allegations involving a 7-year-old boy inside a residential building in the Colombian capital. The case has sparked widespread outrage and renewed concerns about child safety and foreign sex tourism.
Incident Reported in Upscale Bogotá Neighbourhood
According to officials, the incident occurred in a northern district of Bogotá, where witnesses alerted authorities after seeing the alleged abuse take place on a balcony in broad daylight.
Video footage circulating on social media showed a man holding a child near the edge of a balcony while bystanders shouted for him to stop.
Local authorities confirmed that multiple children were found inside the suspect’s apartment after police entered the property. They were taken for medical evaluation and placed under state protection.
Bogotá Mayor Carlos Fernando Galán said the suspect was taken into custody and stressed that there is “no room for mistreatment or abuse of boys and girls” in the city.
Investigation Underway in Colombia
The suspect reportedly arrived in Colombia on June 6, and immigration authorities confirmed he entered the country shortly before the alleged incident.
Child protection officials have since taken custody of the minors involved, while investigators continue to examine the circumstances surrounding their presence in the apartment.
Colombia’s child welfare agency said it is working closely with law enforcement as the investigation continues.
Gustavo Petro also addressed the case publicly, calling for stronger measures to prevent individuals accused of sexual offences from entering the country, including potential visa restrictions.
Rising Concern Over Foreign Exploitation Cases
The incident has intensified debate in Colombia over child protection and the presence of foreign nationals accused of exploitation-related crimes.
Authorities say the country has increased monitoring efforts in response to previous cases, with officials reporting dozens of foreign nationals turned away earlier this year on suspicion of involvement in sex tourism-related offences.
The investigation remains ongoing.
