Milo Ventimiglia shares why his roles mean more now after becoming a father
The actor says his children have inspired him to think more carefully about the work he leaves behind
Milo Ventimiglia, who shares 16-month-old daughter Ke’ala with his pregnant wife Jarah Mariano, said having a family of his own has given him a deeper emotional connection that he can bring into his performances.
“Life is just different. Being a father has deepened the well of emotions that I experience,” Ventimiglia told People.
“We deal in emotions, so being able to tap into that well is more impactful for the work,” he added.
The This Is Us star explained that his projects now carry a greater sense of purpose because he is no longer working only for himself.
“It also makes the work more important, because I’m not just doing this for me, for my crew, for my cast. I’m doing this for my family, to provide,” he said, adding that he understands the significance of time spent away from his loved ones.
Ventimiglia also revealed that fatherhood has made him more thoughtful about the roles he accepts, especially because he wants his children to one day be proud of the work he created.
“I think about my kids, and I’m like, ‘What am I putting out into the world that years down the line, my kids are going to pick up and be like, “Oh, let’s go watch Dad’s TV show?”’” he shared.
The actor’s perspective was also shaped by difficult personal moments, including losing his Malibu home with Mariano during the 2025 California wildfires shortly before their daughter was born.
While he said he is still dealing with insurance matters related to the loss, Ventimiglia remains focused on moving forward and turning life experiences into creativity.
“Some people face tough moments in their lives, and they stop. I’m always propelling forward,” he said.
The I Will Find You star explained that his goals have changed over the years. While he once chased recognition and major career achievements, he now sees acting as a way to connect with and serve others.
“When I was younger, I wanted to win an Academy Award. I wanted to be impressive,” Ventimiglia said.
“Now I no longer feel like I’m acting for myself. I feel like I’m there acting for and serving others. And I’m good with that.”
