'Toy Story 5' smashes 2026 box office records with $312M global opening
The film sets a new franchise benchmark after surpassing the domestic opening of 'Toy Story 4'
Toy Story 5 has stormed the global box office, delivering the biggest opening of 2026 so far and setting new franchise records for Pixar and Disney.
The animated sequel earned an estimated $160 million in its domestic debut weekend, outperforming all major releases this year, including the previously dominant Super Mario Galaxy film.
Internationally, the film added a further $152 million, pushing its global opening total to a staggering $312 million.
The performance also marks a new milestone for the long-running Pixar franchise, surpassing the domestic opening record set by Toy Story 4 and reaffirming the series’ continued box office strength decades after its debut.
Industry analysts have pointed to strong audience reception and nostalgia-driven interest as key drivers behind the film’s success, alongside positive early reviews from critics.
Beyond its cinematic appeal, the film also generated additional attention for its soundtrack.
Pop superstar Taylor Swift contributed an original song titled “I Knew It, I Knew You,” which features in the movie’s score.
Reports suggest Swift was initially hesitant to join the project, but was later persuaded after Pixar producer Jessica Choi personally reached out with a letter explaining the film’s creative vision.
