Actor Walton Goggins saved co-star Olivia Wilde from a life-threatening horse accident during the filming of the 2011 science-fiction western movie Cowboys & Aliens. The actress fell from her horse during a high-speed desert stunt alongside lead actors Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford. Goggins reacted instantly to shield her body on the ground from 40 galloping horses charging directly behind them through heavy dust clouds.

Wilde detailed the rescue during an interview on the Armchair Expert podcast. She explained that the dramatic horse accident occurred while the cast filmed a scene leading a charge across the desert terrain. Her horse suddenly jumped and bucked her off, causing her to strike her head and back on the ground. Wilde landed on the opposite side of a dirt ridge, which completely obscured her from the vision of the oncoming riders behind the lead pack.

The actress recalled lying in the dirt and hearing the approaching stampede sound like thunder. Believing she would be pulverised by the herd, she feared the impact would end her life. Goggins witnessed the fall from his position ahead of the group and used his equestrian skills to manoeuvre his horse sideways directly in front of her motionless body. The calculated action forced the trailing riders to split into two groups around them, effectively protecting Wilde from being trampled.

Wilde praised Goggins as a highly accomplished rider and a real-life hero for handling the chaotic collision. The crew members and background riders originally assumed Goggins had lost control of his animal before realising he was intentionally blocking the path to shield the fallen actress. Wilde concluded that she owes her life to his split-second decision on the set of the feature film.
