Brandy shares powerful response to body critics 'everyone is carrying a story’
The Grammy-winning singer urged people to think twice before commenting on someone's appearance
Brandy is using her voice to encourage kindness after sharing a heartfelt message about body-shaming, urging people to think twice before judging others based on their appearance.
The Grammy-winning singer took to Instagram on Saturday, July 11, to post a candid reflection alongside glamorous photos of herself dressed in an all-gold outfit, calling for more compassion in how people speak about one another.
"I've learned that it takes only a moment to form an opinion about someone's appearance, and a lifetime to understand what they've lived through," Brandy wrote.
The 47-year-old singer continued by encouraging empathy, saying, "So may we become gentler with one another. Not because everyone is fragile, but because everyone is carrying a story we cannot see."
She concluded her message with a reminder that every person deserves dignity and respect.
"Before you speak about someone's body, before you speak about someone's face, before you decide who they are by what you see, remember, you are looking at someone's child. Someone's friend. Someone's dream. Someone's life. A soul. And souls have always been more beautiful than surfaces."
Brandy's post comes as she continues a highly visible return to the spotlight after spending several years largely out of the public eye.
Earlier this year, the singer received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame before releasing her memoir Phases, which offered a deeply personal look at her life and career.
The book explores topics including her long-discussed relationship with Monica, her early romance with Boyz II Men singer Wanya Morris, and her battle with an eating disorder as a teenager.
Speaking about writing the memoir in March, Brandy said she allowed herself "the space to be fearless and vulnerable."
The singer has also made several notable public appearances in recent months. She performed at the 2026 Essence Festival of Culture in New Orleans over the Fourth of July weekend and previously delivered the U.S. national anthem alongside June's Diary at the 2026 NBA All-Star Game.
Last year, Brandy also addressed concern from fans after ending a Chicago concert with Monica early during The Boy Is Mine Tour. She later explained on Instagram that dehydration and feeling faint forced her to cut the performance short.
"I sincerely apologize for the abrupt end to last night's performance in Chicago," she wrote at the time, adding that prioritizing her health was the right decision despite her efforts to return to the stage.
