Yellow heat warning remains active across northern Ontario

Environment Canada continued a yellow heat warning on Tuesday, for the Blind River, Thessalon, Elliot Lake, and Ranger Lake areas, as forecasters warned that the hottest conditions of the week would peak during the day. Daytime temperatures are forecast to reach between 30C and 37C, while overnight lows are expected to remain warm, hovering between 20C and 24C. Humidex values could climb as high as 45 during this extreme weather event.

The agency reported that the high heat and humidity are expected to persist until Wednesday or Thursday evening. Officials warned that these stifling conditions could also reduce local air quality. Consequently, people with respiratory conditions are advised to limit strenuous outdoor activity and monitor local air quality updates closely.

Health officials advised residents to stay hydrated by drinking water before they feel thirsty, spend time in air-conditioned or cool spaces, and avoid strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest parts of the day. They also recommended wearing lightweight, light-coloured clothing and checking on vulnerable individuals, including older adults and young children. Early signs of heat exhaustion include headaches, dizziness, nausea, extreme tiredness, thirst, and dark urine.

Emergency guidelines state that anyone showing severe symptoms, such as hot, red skin, confusion, loss of consciousness, or severe dizziness, requires immediate medical attention. Bystanders should call 9-1-1 immediately while moving the affected person to a cool place and cooling them down using water or ice packs.
