Teenagers arrested after five family members killed in Illinois

Two teenagers were arrested and charged with murder after five family members were killed in a shooting spree in East St. Louis, Illinois. The suspects, 16-year-old Ja’ymier Davis and an unnamed 15-year-old girl, allegedly carried out the killings across multiple locations on Sunday. Police officers apprehended the two minors after flagging a vehicle driven by one of the suspects.

People reported that the Illinois State Police launched their investigation on Sunday after finding the human remains of 49-year-old Cherie L. May at an East St. Louis residence. This discovery led investigators to the bodies of four other relatives in different areas of the city. The other deceased victims were identified as 74-year-old Patricia A. May, 25-year-old Shania W. Thompson, 24-year-old Devin D. May, and 21-year-old Quentin L. Thompson. The 15-year-old suspect is reportedly related to all the victims, with family members stating she is the granddaughter of Patricia.

The tragedy has devastated the local community and left relatives grieving. Two other victims, identified as Tiffany, who is the mother of the Thompson siblings, and a cousin, survived the attack and were hospitalised in serious condition. Relatives have established two online fundraisers to help cover the costs of multiple funerals and to support Devin's one-year-old daughter.

State prosecutors have charged Davis as an adult with five counts of first-degree murder, dismembering a human body, and aggravated vehicular hijacking. He also faces charges of attempted murder, aggravated battery, and unlawful use of a firearm. The St. Clair County State’s Attorney is currently seeking to charge the 15-year-old female suspect as an adult with first-degree murder. Investigators have not released any information regarding a motive for the East St. Louis massacre, but state authorities confirmed there is no ongoing threat to the local community.
