Missouri man charged after fatal shooting over alleged car break-in

Missouri man has been charged with first-degree murder after police said he opened fire on a group he allegedly caught rummaging through his car, killing one man and seriously injuring another.

According to St. Louis police, Timothy Kemper, 39, faces charges of first-degree murder, first-degree assault, unlawful use of a weapon and three counts of armed criminal action in connection with the July 16 shooting.

Investigators said Kemper, who lives on the second floor of a nearby building, saw a group of males around his parked vehicle.

According to a probable cause affidavit, one of the individuals allegedly entered Kemper's car and began searching through it.

Police say suspect admitted to shooting

Authorities allege Kemper retrieved a firearm and fired multiple rounds at the group.

According to the affidavit, two men were struck by gunfire. One later died from his injuries, while the second suffered gunshot wounds to his back, flank, arm and chest.

Both victims were taken to a hospital, where one was pronounced dead.

Police said Kemper later surrendered to officers and admitted he was the shooter.

Surveillance captured group checking vehicles

Investigators said surveillance footage showed the group walking through the neighbourhood and checking car door handles before the shooting.

Police also reported finding Kemper's vehicle after the incident and said it had been broken into and rummaged through.

Following an interview with homicide detectives, prosecutors approved charges against Kemper.

Defence claims self-defence

Court filings submitted by Kemper's attorney describe him as a lifelong St. Louis resident who was 'acting in self-defense.'

Authorities have not publicly disclosed whether Kemper fired from inside his apartment or after going outside to confront the group.

Kemper is scheduled to appear in court for a preliminary hearing on Aug. 17.
