Ohio motorist kills firefighter helping stranded driver in crash

A motorist struck and killed off-duty firefighter Cameron Duvall and seriously injured a woman while they were assisting a disabled driver with a flat tyre in Pepper Pike, Ohio, on Saturday. The fatal three-vehicle collision occurred at approximately 3:00 a.m. local time, prompting emergency responses from local law enforcement and medical personnel.

The Pepper Pike Police Department confirmed the details in an official press release, stating that officers arrived to discover three vehicles involved in the crash. First responders found Duvall and an unidentified woman trapped between two vehicles and immediately initiated lifesaving measures. Emergency personnel pronounced Duvall dead at the scene, while the Pepper Pike Fire Department transported the injured woman to a local hospital, where she remains in stable condition.

Initial police investigations revealed that the driver of the first vehicle called for roadside assistance after suffering a flat tyre. Duvall and the woman subsequently arrived to help, parking their vehicle directly in front of the disabled car. While the pair worked near the trunk of the disabled automobile, a third motorist struck them and the stationary vehicle. Police subsequently arrested the third driver, charging the individual with aggravated vehicular homicide, aggravated vehicular assault, operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol, and failure to maintain an assured clear distance ahead.

Cleveland 19 reported that the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s Office officially identified the deceased victim as 29-year-old Duvall. North Randall Mayor David Smith and North Randall Fire Department Chief Marshall Shorts confirmed in a joint statement that Duvall had served as a firefighter with the North Randall Fire Department since joining in 2022.

The municipal statement praised Duvall as a dedicated resident and valued public safety member whose service exemplified the finest qualities of the village. The North Randall Professional Firefighters IAFF 5365 union also paid tribute to Duvall on social media, describing him as a hero, brother, and friend while sharing a photograph of his official uniform. The Pepper Pike Police Department offered its deepest condolences to the families, friends, and colleagues affected by the tragedy.
