Hayley Atwell returns as Peggy Carter in 'Avengers Doomsday'

British actress Hayley Atwell will reprise her role as Peggy Carter in the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe feature film Avengers: Doomsday. The 44-year-old performer surprised comic book fans by making an appearance at San Diego Comic-Con in California to promote the upcoming superhero ensemble movie.

The Sun reported that Atwell joined fellow cast members on stage, including returning Marvel stars Robert Downey Jr, Chris Evans, Lewis Pullman, David Harbour, Kelsey Grammer, and Pedro Pascal. Co-director Joe Russo also attended the promotional event to discuss the blockbuster, which is scheduled to arrive in cinemas on December 18. Fans previously believed that Carter’s narrative arc concluded during the finale of Avengers: Endgame in 2019, when Captain America Steve Rogers travelled back in time to live alongside her in the 1940s.

Atwell hinted that the ongoing romance between her character and Rogers, played by Evans, provided the primary motivation behind her unexpected return to the franchise. The actress noted that audiences cannot separate Steve Rogers from his longing for Carter, whom she first portrayed in 2011's Captain America: The First Avenger. However, Atwell emphasised that viewers will experience a distinctly different side of the character this time as she responds to the existential scale and high stakes of the new narrative.

Having portrayed the secret agent periodically over the past 15 years, Atwell expressed strong enthusiasm for continuing her relationship with the comic book studio, stating that she hopes to play Carter for another decade. The San Diego presentation formed part of a series of major project announcements from Marvel Studios, which also confirmed British actor David Jonsson will take on the title role in Black Panther 3 in 2028.
