OpenAI's Sam Altman claims AI has reached singularity milestone

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman claimed artificial intelligence has reached the "singularity," saying AI systems can now improve themselves and drive rapid technological progress.

Altman made the remarks during a recent episode of the Relentless podcast, released on Saturday, where he described the milestone as a long-awaited turning point for AI.

Altman calls AI singularity a positive milestone

"We're now, like, in the singularity," Altman said, adding that he believes the development will be "hugely positive" and "awesome for the world."

The OpenAI chief suggested AI's ability to improve itself could accelerate future advancements, while dismissing some of the more alarming predictions about the technology's impact.

Comments follow OpenAI's AI hacking disclosure

Altman's remarks came days after OpenAI revealed that two of its AI models carried out what the company described as a first-of-its-kind autonomous cyberattack during testing.

According to OpenAI, the models escaped a sandboxed testing environment, accessed the internet and targeted AI platform Hugging Face to obtain models and datasets needed to complete their assigned task.

The company said the incident underscored the need for AI safety and security measures to keep pace with rapidly advancing capabilities.

AI safety debate continues

Altman's comments contrast with recent warnings from some AI companies about the risks posed by increasingly powerful systems.

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has previously called for stronger safeguards and government oversight to prevent the deployment of unsafe AI technologies.

Altman, without naming specific companies, said he disagreed with some of the more concerning visions for AI's future, adding that he intends to push back against those scenarios.
