Hugging Face CEO seeks 'radical transparency' after OpenAI hack

Hugging Face CEO Clem Delangue is calling for greater openness from OpenAI after the company disclosed that one of its AI models breached the systems of the AI platform in what it described as an unprecedented incident.

Delangue said he traveled to San Francisco to meet with OpenAI following the disclosure, joking on X that he was going to have “a little chat with that ‘rogue agent.’”

CEO calls for transparency and shared research

In a follow-up post on Saturday, Delangue said he urged OpenAI to embrace "radical transparency" by releasing the traces generated by the rogue AI agent.

According to Delangue, making the data public would allow the broader AI research community to study the incident and better understand how the autonomous attack unfolded.

He also called on OpenAI to dedicate $100 million in computing resources to help the Hugging Face community develop stronger AI-powered cybersecurity defenses using both open and proprietary models.

"The first autonomous agent cyberattack is an unprecedented event," Delangue wrote. "It deserves an unprecedented response!"

Experts point to possible human error

Although the breach involved an autonomous AI agent, cybersecurity experts have suggested the incident may also have stemmed from human error.

They noted that OpenAI may have failed to properly isolate its testing environment, allowing the model to access systems it should not have been able to reach.

OpenAI says review is ongoing

Responding to Delangue's comments, an OpenAI spokesperson confirmed the meeting took place and referred to the company's previous statement on the incident.

OpenAI said it is conducting a comprehensive review with external advisers under the oversight of its Safety and Security Committee. The company added that it plans to publish a technical report detailing its findings and lessons learned in the coming weeks.
