Tom Holland reveals 'Spider-Man: Brand New Day' is 'more mature'

Tom Holland admitted Spider-Man: Brand New Day takes Peter Parker in a more mature direction, with a story he believes will resonate with young audiences.

Speaking to Deadline at the Los Angeles premiere of the film, Holland said the fourth instalment of the Spider-Man franchise explores darker themes than its predecessors.

Holland teases more mature story

"It's more mature, and it's a darker theme," Holland said. "And it's a theme that I think is incredibly relatable to young people."

He explained that the film centres on Peter Parker adjusting to life in a new city while feeling isolated.

"This idea of moving to a new city and feeling like you're all alone, and sometimes neglecting the fact that the best thing that ever happened to you is standing right next to you," Holland said.

He added that telling a relatable story on such a large scale was an exciting opportunity.

"I think for me, being able to tell a story that's relatable on a stage as big as this is such an important responsibility for Destin [Daniel Cretton] to carry that theme throughout the movie. I was just really excited at the opportunity."

New chapter follows Peter Parker's fresh start

Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and written by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers, Spider-Man: Brand New Day also stars Zendaya, Sadie Sink, Jacob Batalon, Jon Bernthal, Tramell Tillman, Michael Mando and Mark Ruffalo.

According to the official synopsis, Peter Parker devotes himself to fighting crime full time as Spider-Man in a world that no longer remembers him. As his friends move on with their lives, Peter faces a transformation that could determine the fate of the city.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day arrives in theatres on July 31.
